The American Giants were one of the premier Negro League teams in the 1920s and 1930s and it was lead by pitchers like Hall of Famer southpaw Bill Foster (second player from the left) and Malvin “Putt” Powell ( player on immediate right). Also in the photo is Ted Trent (player in the middle) and Sugg Cornelius (player on immediate left). The player second from the right is unnamed.
That year the American Giants finished 36-21 on a club that featured Negro League legends like shortstop Willie Wells, third baseman Alex Radcliff, first baseman Mules Suttles and centerfielder Turkey Stearnes.
Despite their star power the Chicago club would fall to the Philadelphia Stars in the Negro League Championship Series.
