Congratulates To Pat Hughes On His Hall of fame Selection!

I’d like to extend a hearty Ballball History Comes Alive congratulations to Pat Hughes on his selection as this year’s Ford Frick Award recipient and his entry into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Cub fans like me who have listened to Pat over the years know what a consummate professional he is, certainly one of the best in the business. We also know that he possesses a deep appreciation for the history of the game.

Back in 2016, shortly after the Cubs won the 2016 World Series, I wrote the following essay promoting Pat’s candidacy with the hope of giving him some long-overdue recognition. So on this happy occasion, I thought this would be a fitting time to pull the essay out of the Baseball History Comes Alive “filing cabinet;” and so I’m pinning it to the home page. Congrats Pat for this well-deserved honor!

Here’s my 2016 essay:

Let’s get Pat Hughes into the Hall of Fame!

What a great way this would be to top off an unbelievable year. The National Baseball Hall of Fame just announced yesterday that Pat Hughes is among the eight finalists for the 2017 Ford Frick Award, presented for excellence in broadcasting.

Anyone who’s been a Cub fan for any length of time knows that Pat Hughes is the best in the business. Pat’s been in the radio booth for 33 years, 12 with the Brewers and 21 years with the Cubs. I can’t think of anyone who is more deserving of this honor. Some of Pat’s calls are classics. His most recent calls of the Cub pennant clincher and the final out of the 2016 World Series will be played over and over for years.

Baseball history fans like myself have come to appreciate Pat’s deep love and respect for the history of our great game. His segment “This Day In Baseball History” has been a staple of Cub broadcasts for many years.

According to the Sun-Times, the Hall 0f Fame selected only major league team-specific broadcasters based on “commitment to excellence, quality of broadcasting abilities, reverence within the game, popularity with fans, and recognition by peers.” As all Cub fans will agree, Pat blows all these requirements right out of the water!

The 17-member selection committee is made up of the 13 living Frick Award recipients and includes Vin Scully and Pat’s long-time partner with the Brewers Bob Uecker. So that’s real good news. Maybe Uek can help pull Pat in!

The winner will be announced on December 5 at the 2016 winter meetings…so we have time to create a real “ground swell” for Pat. He’ll need our help, because he’s a radio guy, not a TV guy, so he starts out at a disadvantage.

To start, please “like” and “share” this post…maybe it will take off among Cub fans and other fans of the game.

If anybody has ideas on how we can show our support for Pat and help get Pat’s name in front of the committee, please let me know right away. Let’s put our collective “Cubdom” heads together and…

LET’S GET PAT HUGHES INTO THE HALL OF FAME!

In the meantime, check out the  photo gallery to see a nice photo tribute I put together for the great Cub broadcaster, Pat Hughes!

No way to vote for him. Was just hoping there would be a ground swell for him, maybe get a petition in front of the committee.
