Just five days earlier, Yankee Stadium opened to quite the pageantry as 74,000-plus fans, including President Warren Harding, were on hand to celebrate the Yankees newest ballpark in the Bronx. But on this cold and blustery day only 8,000 were in attendance unceremoniously, including once again President Harding.

But the result was much the same as it was on opening day with the Yankees winning and Ruth hitting a home run and a President on hand, only it would be against the Washington Senators and not the Boston Red Sox.

Thanks to Ruth’s heroics, New York would win by a 4-0 score. The Bambino would go a perfect 3 for 3 on the day with three runs batted in and capped his day with a fifth-inning home run off Senators Allen Russell. On the mound it was Sad Sam Jones getting the shutout for the home team by limiting Washington to just five hits and striking out four batters. Jones also helped his cause with a run batted in.

Close up of the play at home plate

As for the photo it looks like it’s the Yankees on the field and there is a play at the plate, and since the Senators were shutout the runner must have been called out by home plate umpire Tommy Connolly. One of the interesting aspects of this photo that me and Don Stokes were studying is the angle of the runner at home, looks like he made a bit of a left turn right before the plate, maybe because as Don noted their was a bat in his base path.
