Those Damn Yankees! Lou Gehrig flips the ball to Lefty Gomez to get the last out in the 1937 World Series beating the NY Giants 4-2 for their second consecutive title.

Unfortunately for the Giants, who also lost the 1936 World Series to the Yankees, they didn’t stand much of a chance. Not only did they lost the first three games of the series, but by a combined score of 21-3. By the time the Giants righted their ship and won game four to avoid a sweep, it was much too late. In the fifth game the Yanks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the strength of home runs by Myril Hoag and Joe DiMaggio. The Giants would tie it up on a Mel Ott two-run home run in third inning, but two frames later the Yanks would grab back the lead, and for good, with pitcher Gomez helping his cause with a RBI single and the Iron Horse adding an insurance run with a double.

Now with a 4-2 lead, Gomez would go the distance to shut down the Giants and help secure the Yankees sixth World Series title in 15 years. It was Lefty’s second win of the series and he finished the Fall Classic with a 1.50 ERA.

With the bats, it was both Gehrig and DiMaggio leading the way, both hit a dinger and they combined for seven runs batted in. The unsung hero though might have been George Selkirk, who had five hits in the series but made them count as he drove in six runs himself.
