Polo Grounds, Manhattan, NY, October 14, 1911 – World Series action with Christy Mathewson pitching

The NY Giants great Christy Mathewson rears back to let go of a hard one against the Philadelphia Athletics in the First Game of the 1911 World Series. The Giants, behind the masterful pitching of their right handed ace, would take the first game by a 2-1 score. Mathewson would out duel fellow Hall of Famer and A’s pitcher Chief Bender by holding Philadelphia to six hits and striking out five. Bender was strong in his own right striking out 11 Giants. Despite the first game win the Giants would lose the Series in six games with Bender winning two of them including the decisive Game Six.
