Sportsman Park, St Louis, MO, ca 1950 – The wear and tear of two teams in one ballpark shows

 

For 33 years Sportsman Park was home to two Major League teams (Cardinals & Browns) and this photo showed the wear and tear its infield grass endured. During that time, 1920 to 1953, it’s a safe guess Sportsman Park hosted over 5,000 Major League games and was one of the busiest ballparks in the country. But in 1953 when the realization that St Louis wasn’t big enough town for two franchises, the Browns packed up and moved off to Baltimore, where they became the Orioles. The Cardinals had Sportsman Park to themselves until 1966 when they moved into the newly concrete-built Busch Stadium.
