But not everything was peaches n’ cream for the Yankees, reliable ace Lefty Gomez was sent to an early shower in the fourth inning after giving up nine hits and five runs, with only two runs being earned because of an error from Yankees third baseman Red Rolfe.
An estimated 25,000 were on hand for the historic debut of one of soon to be Yankee legends. Also in the photo is home plate umpire Bill Summers, best known for calling Jackie Robinson safe on his famous World Series steal of home, and Browns catcher Rollie Hemsley, who later in the inning would get injured when an errant throw hit in the back of the neck. Tony Giuliani would take his place for the remainder of the game.
