In the top of the ninth inning Cleveland Indians pinch-runner Roy Hughes is spikes up as he slides into Tigers third baseman Marv Owen, who would still be able to avoid Hughes treacherous feet to apply the tag for the out. Hughes, who was running for Eddie Phillips, was trying to advance on pitcher Lloyd Brown’s bunt. The game would go extra innings with Detroit winning the the first game of the Saturday doubleheader 5-4 in the bottom of the 12th with a line out to Indians center-fielder Earl Averill to score Ray Hayworth with the deciding run.
The win would help keep the first-place Tigers 3.0 games up on the Yankees and in winning the second game 7-3 they would increase that lead to 3.5 games.
