In the top of the ninth inning, Cleveland Indians pinch-runner Roy Hughes is spikes up as he slides into Tigers third baseman Marv Owen, who would still be able to avoid Hughes treacherous feet to apply the tag for the out. Hughes, who was running for Eddie Phillips, was trying to advance on pitcher Lloyd Brown’s bunt. The game would go extra innings with Detroit winning the the first game of the Saturday doubleheader 5-4 in the bottom of the 12th with a line out to Indians center-fielder Earl Averill to score Ray Hayworth with the deciding run.
Relief pitcher Schoolboy Rowe worked the 10th inning to get the win that would help keep the first-place Tigers three games up on the Yankees. They would also take the second game 7-3 to increase that lead to 3.5 games. A lead that would hold up as Detroit would not only win their American League pennant, but the World Series as well, their first title in their 35-year history.
