Sportsman Park, St Louis, MO, October 2, 1908 – Ty Cobb steals third base against St Louis Browns

The Tigers Ty Cobb steals third base as Browns third baseman Hobe Ferris leaps in the air to snag catcher Syd Smith’s high throw. The first-place Tigers would score three times in the opening frame sending future Hall of Fame pitcher Rube Waddell to the showers and would hold off the Browns in a 7-6 win that ended in controversy. In the ninth inning with Cobb at first base and the score tied at 6-6, teammate Claude Rossman hit an extra base-hit that was ruled a ground rules double, Cobb had scored easily and instead of being sent back to third base the umpires Jack Sheridan and Rip Egan let the winning run stand, much to the Browns protest.
