Sportsman’s Park, St Louis, MO, October 6, 1946 – The shift is in effect in the 1946 World Series with Ted Williams at bat

It’s the first game of the 1946 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and St Louis Cardinals with Ted Williams at bat – notice the shift with third baseman Whitey Kurowski shifting to a normal second base position and second baseman Red Schoendienst moving over closer to Stan Musial at first. Marty Marion remains at shortstop.

Now the caption read that this photo was taken in the third inning and I was ready to take that at face value until I noticed the box score provided down below said Dom DiMaggio singled ahead of Williams in that inning, but as you can see there is no one on first base. So either this was Williams first at bat leading off the top of the second inning or the sixth inning when he came up with one out and no one on.

In the end the Red Sox took Game One thanks to a Rudy York’s 10th inning home run off Cardinals starting pitcher Howie Pollet for a 3-2 win. Despite this opening setback the St Louis would win the World Series in seven games.
