The Leslie Jones Boston Public Library Baseball Collection, Part Two

As I mentioned in my Part One post about the Leslie Jones Boston Public Library Baseball collection, it’s full of about 3000 photos from mainly the 1930s and ‘40s taken by Boston Globe photographer Leslie Jones. Almost all were taken in either Fenway Park or in Braves Field.

Since the collection covers both the National League (the Braves and their NL opponents), and the American League (the Red Sox and their AL opponents), many lesser-known and largely forgotten players from both leagues are featured in the collection. When I was a member of the team identifying the players in the photos, it always gave me a nice feeling of satisfaction when I could positively identify some obscure, long-forgotten ballplayer from the ’30’s or ’40’s who would otherwise be totally lost to history.

In the featured photo above, we see a beautiful Don Stokes colorization of Lou Gehrig and Lefty Gomez with former Yankee teammate, Billy Werber from the Leslie Jones collection.

In the gallery I put together for this post, you’ll find a lot of guys I’ll bet you never heard of, but were still a part of the game from that long ago era. Check out my photo gallery tribute to some of the games lesser-knowns from one of baseball’s Golden Ages.
