Dizzy Dean of the Cubs pitches to the Cardinals catcher Don Padgett in the second inning of Dean’s first start of the 1940 season. While he was able to get Padgett to pop up to second base the rest of his day was a rough ride, Dean would be chased to the showers in the 5th inning giving up seven hits and five runs, four that were earned. The Cardinals behind Johnny Mize two RBIs would beat Dean and the Cubs 5-4. For Dean though the end was near, he would finish the season marred by injuries with a 3-3 record and a 5.17 ERA. The future Hall of Famer would pitch briefly in 1941 and again with the St Louis Browns in 1947.
