A distraught Dizzy Dean is comforted by Cubs teammates after being taken out of a crucial pennant race game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dean was one out away from a complete game win when Cubs manager Gabby Hartnett replaced him with reliever Bill Lee, who got the final out for the save. The Chicago win helped cut the Pirates pennant lead to a half game and the Cubs would soon overtake Pittsburgh to win the National League flag by two games.
