Dodgers Dolph Camilli helps ruin opening day for Phillies fans with his two-run homer that erases a one-run lead for the home team. Camilli’s 4th inning blast to off Phillies starter Wayne Lemaster put Brooklyn ahead 3-2 and they would roll to an easy 12-5 win over the dreadful Phillies and a sign of things to come for Philadephia. Not only would theyfinish 1938 with a dismal 45-115 record, but they would go on to loss 100+ games for the next five years averaging 105 losses a year during this span.
Only 10,000 baseball fans made it out the Baker Bowl to see the Phillies start afresh in 1938. Probably a good indication of how weary Phillies fans have been from the constant losing.
And this season would be the last year for the decrepit Baker Bowl. Built in 1887, time was gaining on this old bandbox and the upkeep was proving to costly. So on the Fourth of July the Phillies called Shibe Park it’s new home and christen the event with a doubleheader against the Boston Braves. And a wonderful and historic chapter is closed on Philadelphia’s most memorable ballpark.
