“From the Lighter Side of Baseball!”

Baseball Players and Their Furry Friends!

I recently stumbled on to this neat photo of Harry Wolter of the Boston Red Sox holding a cute little dog. It’s from Opening Day of the 1909 baseball season against the White Sox at Chicago’s South Side Park. Harry Wolter played seven seasons in the major leagues (1907-1917) as an outfielder/first baseman  and hit.270 over his career. Harry wasn’t known much for power: He drove in exactly 27 runs and no home runs! The dog may have been Harry’s own pet, or perhaps was the team mascot. We’ll never know.

That got me to thinking about baseball and its long association with animals. I put together a nice little photo gallery of ball players with their dogs, along with other furry friends, including cats and bears, and even a few other surprises.

However, as a Cub fan, I’m way too superstitious to put in anything involving goats, so don’t look for any of them…

If you’re a baseball fan and an animal lover, you might want to check this out!
