In Game 2 of the World Series, the Boston Braves’ Bob Elliott hits into a heartbreaking double play to kill any hopes of an 8th inning rally. Trailing 3-1 to the Cleveland Indians, the 8th inning started off well enough for the Braves when Earl Torgeson lead off with a single against Bob Lemon, but Elliot proceeded him hitting a ground ball to second baseman Joe Gordon who started the 4-6-3 double play. The Indians would score another run in the 9th inning for insurance and winning 4-1 to tie the series at one game a piece. Lemon would get the complete game win for Cleveland while striking out five.
The Indians would go on to win the World Series in six games. If the MVP was given in the 1948 World Series, Indians pitcher Bob Lemon might have been the recipient of the award by posting a 2-0 record and a 1.65 ERA. The only bat for the Tribe that might have gotten consideration would have been Larry Doby’s, who hit .318 in the series with one home run and two runs batted in.
