Mickey Mantle throws his bat in the air in frustration after flying out to end the game against the Indians pitcher Mudcat Grant. Limiting the Yankees juggernaut lineup to just three hits and striking out nine in the 5-1 victory, Grant improved his record to 12-6 on the season. But despite the win, Cleveland was still mired in fourth place and 16 games behind the first place Yanks.

The only run for New York came from the bat of Elston Howard who hit a fifth inning home run off Mudcat, his 12th dinger of the season. The Indians jumped all over Yanks starter Jim Coates for a 5-0 lead and sending him to the showers in the third inning, the big blow coming from Bubba Phillips, whose two-run home run gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

37,840 were on hand for a game that took two hours and 16 minutes to complete.
