Braves slugger Hank Aaron shows his speed hustling to third base
The Braves Hank Aaron hustles to third base in a 2-1 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers as the NL pennant race starts to take shape. Milwaukee was up four games on the third-place Dodgers going into the game hoping to extend that lead, but Brooklyn had other ideas taking the lead late in the game on a eighth inning single by Dale Mitchell scoring Jackie Robinson. From there Dodgers pitcher Roger Craig would make a rare appearance as a reliever coming into the ninth inning for the save, the tall burly righthander would set down the Braves lineup in a 1-2-3 inning.
The Braves would stay in first-place until mid-September when Brooklyn would overtake them, aided by a late Milwaukee five-game losing streak, to win the National League pennant.
Despite their second-place showing things were looking up for the Milwaukee Braves, they would rebound from this season and in the following year in 1957 they would take the pennant with relative ease and then surprise the powerhouse Yankees in the World Series beating them in a seven games. It would be their first World Series title in Milwaukee and their first title in 43 years going all the way back to 1914 and the Boston “Miracle” Braves.
