DiMaggio slides in safely past Giants Harry Danning with insurance run

Yankees rookie Joe DiMaggio slides in safely past Giants catcher Harry Danning during the sixth game of the 1936 World Series. DiMaggio’s insurance run in the ninth inning would give the Yanks a 7-5 lead and from there the floodgates would open as they would add six more runs. Now with a 13-5 lead, reliever Johnny Murphy would shut the door down in a 1-2-3 ninth inning giving the Yankees their fifth World Series title.

DiMaggio batted .346 during the six game series and Lou Gehrig belted two home runs and knocked in seven runs. On the mound the Yankees were led by Lefty Gomez who won two games including the clincher even so he struggled with a 4.70 ERA in the series. It was also the Yankees first World Series without Babe Ruth.

Also in the photo is plate umpire Harry Geisel.
