Athletics hurler Chief Bender gets ready to deliver to NY Giants pinch-hitter Doc Crandall as he precariously holds to a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Led by catcher Wally Schang’s four RBIs, the A’s had jumped to a 6-0 lead by the fifth inning and with their ace Bender on the mound looked to be on their way to an easy Game Four win. But the Giants bats had other ideas and Schang three-run homer in the 7th inning help cut the lead to just one run. But the future Hall of Famer hurler buckled down and got Crandall to ground out to second baseman Eddie Collins to start a 1-2-3 inning to secure the victory and give Connie Mack’s Athletics a three games to one lead in the series.
It was also the first game, and only game, in the series that the home team won. In the fifth game the Athletics would beat the Giants at the Polo Grounds 3-1 as ace Eddie Plank (we posted a photo of him getting the last strike last Thursday) would shut the door and give Philadelphia it’s third World Series title in four years.
