Here is a wonderful photo of a game played between Dartmouth College and a unknown opponent. You can see the layout of the ball field is unique as the catchers area is a huge rectangular shape, it was not uncommon for the catcher stand a comfortable distance from home plate catching the hurler’s pitches on a bounce. You see a footpath cut through the diamond to the left of second base, probably making a lot of interesting ground balls for the shortstop. The wooden backstop looks portable and most likely removed when there is no games being played.

As for the game itself little is known except for what we see in the photo, which looks like the bases are loaded. The pitcher most likely was throwing underhand as still was the practice at the time.
