Happy Mother’s Day From Baseball History Comes Alive!
As you’ve heard me say before, I always try to find a connection between baseball history and the particular holidays that we celebrate. But let’s be honest. It’s not exactly easy to find a connection between baseball and Mother’s Day.
So after an “exhaustive Internet search” (which actually means I put the words “Baseball” and “Mother’s Day” together in a Google search), this one of Lou Gehrig helping his mother with the Mother’s Day dinner dishes (which I’m sure many of you have seen before) will have to do. I did manage to find a couple
others that you can check out in the photo gallery. Although, when you actually think about it, is there any mother in baseball history more recognizable than Ma Gehrig? Any mother who played more of an active role in her son’s life? So I’m very happy to feature her today.
Lou even singled out his parents in his “Luckiest Man” speech on July 4, 1939 at Yankee Stadium saying: “…When you have a father and mother who work all their lives so you can have an education and build your body, it’s a blessing…”. As is well known, Lou was devoted to his mother. Also remember that the feud between Lou and Babe Ruth apparently came when Lou heard about some nasty remarks Claire Ruth said about his mother. That was unforgivable! Nobody insults Christina Gehrig and gets away with it!
Anyway…I hope you all have a great day with your families while honoring your mother. Just think of all those Little League games she went to even if you weren’t exactly a star player! I’ve heard many stories of mothers never too busy to play catch with their sons or daughters, often times taking more of an active role than the father!
And please don’t forget to do your share today in helping out around the kitchen…just like Lou Gehrig helped out his mother, Christina. If the great “Iron Horse” can do it, so can we! And Lou looks pretty spiffy in that bow tie, too!
