My New Book:

The Best of Baseball History Comes Alive

What’s the old saying, “If you don’t toot your own horn, nobody else will!”

Using that as my excuse, I’m very happy to announce that my new book, The Best of Baseball History Comes Alive is now available on Amazon in ebook and paperback formats. It’s a collection of over 100 of the best-received essays that have appeared here on the website. Also included are some book reviews I’ve written, essays from my contributors, and sections from Gary’s Handy-Dany World Series Reference Guide. Special thanks to Don Stokes for allowing me to use his great colorization of the great Bambino, Babe Ruth, on the cover.

I’d like to personally thank all of the loyal readers of both the website and also of our Old-Time Baseball Photos Facebook page. The Facebook page has grown to over 80K followers. When I joined the Facebook page with my Facebook partner Ron Bolton, I never dreamed I’d still be at it almost eight years later! I’m the type of guy who normally doesn’t do the same thing for more than six months at a time!

All the positive feedback I’ve received here on the website has made my humble efforts to preserve baseball’s glorious history – and to keep it alive and well – all worthwhile. It’s a labor of love actually.

Here’s an excerpt from the Amazon description of the book:

Over the years, baseball historian Gary L. Livacari has written over one thousand essays for his Baseball History Comes Alive website. Covering all historical eras of the National Pastime, this volume is a collection of over one hundred of his most well-received essays.

There’s a certain romanticism to the “Old Days” of baseball that the current game lacks. The author tries to recapture that lost charm in these essays. If you’re looking for writing on the modern game, you won’t find it here. What you will find is entertaining, interesting essays, stories, and out-right gossip from the Golden Days of baseball. It is a book that will appeal to baseball history fans of all stripes and also to those interested to learn the impact baseball has had on American history and culture. All who love baseball and its glorious past will find the collection to be a source of enjoyable reading. As the author says in his introduction, “If you love baseball history, you’ve come to the right place!”

Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many of you through the website, even though we’ve never met in person. I’ve always enjoyed the interactions, the light-hearted give-and-take, and your insightful comments. Believe me, I’ve learned a lot from you. So even though we’ve never met, we all share something in common, something that seems to tell us that we’re not strangers. And that something is a love of baseball and a love of reading about its glorious past.

One more thing: Keep in mind that if any of you guys would like to submit an essay on any topic related to baseball history for publication here on the site, the invitation is always open!

Thanks again!

Gary

I'm a baseball historian who also enjoys writing. My forte is identifying ballplayers in old photos, and my special interest is the Dead Ball Era.

Gary….it’s not “tootin’ your own horn” when a person can provide the goods to back it up, which you surely do. I’m quite sure this most recent publication is a “must read” for any baseball fanatic of any age. I still remember; as a little kid, my fascination of eagerly pouring through any and all baseball literatures I could get my hands on. Today, I still have that eager fascination. Looking forward to your newest. And yes indeed, people who share a common love of baseball are not “strangers”.
