A colorization by Don Stokes of a George Grantham Bain photo showing the New York Highlanders taking batting practice before their home opener against the Washington Senators. The Highlanders would be shutout by the Senators Bob Groom 1-0 in front of more than 14,000 disappointed Highlander fans.
For the season the Highlanders, managed by Hal Chase, would finish the season with a .500 of 76-76 and finished in sixth place and 25.5 games back of the American League pennant winning Philadelphia Athletics. The Senators fared worse with a 64-90 record and finished 38.5 games out of first despite a stellar season season by Walter Johnson who won 25 games with a 1.90 ERA. The Big Train also had six shutouts on the year.
Love this BP scene. The more things change, the more they stay the same. #baseball #timeless
